Columbia Pictures| US film production and distribution company founded in 1924. It grew out of a smaller company founded in 1920 by brothers Harry (1891–1958) and Jack Cohn (1989–1956) and their friend Joe Brandt (1882–1939). Under Harry Cohn's guidance, Columbia became a major studio by the 1940s, producing such commercial hits as Gilda (1946). After Cohn's death in 1958 the studio remained successful, producing such international films as Lawrence of Arabia (1962). |
| Columbia Pictures was sold to the Japanese electronics firm Sony in 1989. The company also produces television films through its subsidiary Screen Gems. |
