Columbia Pictures

US film production and distribution company founded in 1924. It grew out of a smaller company founded in 1920 by brothers Harry (1891–1958) and Jack Cohn (1989–1956) and their friend Joe Brandt (1882–1939). Under Harry Cohn's guidance, Columbia became a major studio by the 1940s, producing such commercial hits as Gilda (1946). After Cohn's death in 1958 the studio remained successful, producing such international films as Lawrence of Arabia (1962).

Columbia Pictures was sold to the Japanese electronics firm Sony in 1989. The company also produces television films through its subsidiary Screen Gems.
