dualism

In philosophy, the belief that reality is essentially dual in nature. The French philosopher René Descartes, for example, referred to thinking and material substance. These entities interact but are fundamentally separate and distinct.

Dualism is contrasted with monism, the theory that reality is made up of only one substance.
