Commewijne

Coastal district in northeast Suriname, bordered to the north by the Atlantic; area 4,110 sq km/1,587 sq mi; population (1996) 20,063. The capital is Nieuw Amsterdam, the former Dutch colonial port, located at the confluence of the Commewijne and Suriname rivers.
