Committee of Imperial Defence

Informal group established 1902 to coordinate planning of the British Empire's defence forces. Initially meeting on a temporary basis, it was established permanently 1904. Members were usually cabinet ministers concerned with defence, military leaders, and key civil servants.

The committee had influence but no executive power. It was taken over by the War Council in wartime.
