Commonwealth GamesMultisport gathering of competitors from British Commonwealth countries, held every four years. The first meeting (known as the British Empire Games) was in Hamilton, Canada, in August 1930. British Airways flew the prime minister non - stop from Brussels to Melbourne for his Commonwealth Games visit plus meetings with Australian counterpart John Howard. Rachel Corbett, executive director of the Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association, says Outgames chose 2009 to "tap into the same sponsorship and broadcast dollars" as the multisport events that tend to crowd into even years, including the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games.
