Communist Party of the United States| US political party established in 1921 by the merger of the Communist Labor Party and the Communist Party of America, both founded in 1919. The new organization became the Workers Party, and in 1929 assumed its present name. It was first led by William Z Foster, and from 1959 by Gus Hall. During the Cold War, the party was restricted by Congress and declined but has since resumed activities, remaining insignificant in number and influence. |
