Companies Act 1985

Act of Parliament underpinning modern company law in the UK. The act outlined the way companies should be set up, run, and wound up. In particular, it defined the difference between a private limited company and a public limited company. A complex piece of legislation, the act was introduced in 1985. It was subsequently amended in 1989 (to bring the law into line with European Union (EU) legislation) and in 2004.

Most company law provisions of the 1985, 1989, and 2004 legislation have been consolidated in the Companies Act 2006.
