Companion of Honour

British order of knighthood (see knighthood, order of) founded in 1917 by George V. It is of one class only, and carries no title, but Companions append CH to their names, next to and after the initials GBE (Knight or Dame Grand Cross). The number is limited to 65 and the award is made to both men and women for conspicuous national service.

The gold oval badge bears a mounted knight beside an oak tree from which hangs a shield of the royal arms; the motto is ‘In action faithful and in honour clear’, and the ribbon is carmine in colour.
