comparative musicology

The term used up to the middle of the 20th century to describe the branch of musicology which examines the music of different cultures - especially non-Western cultures (German vergleichende Musikwissenschaft). Since about 1950 the word ‘ethnomusicology’ has replaced it in common usage.

With roots in comparative musicology of the late nineteenth century, ethnomusicology has broadened to include not only the study of music but also the study of the musical behaviour and the cognitive processes that go into the creation of music.
