Théâtre de Complicité

English touring company, founded in 1983. It originally specialized in small-scale theatre using mime techniques, but has expanded into larger-scale productions of classic texts and pieces devised specifically for the company, while still remaining characteristically innovatory and dynamic. Notable productions have included Dürrenmatt's The Visit (1988–89); a devised show The Street of Crocodiles (1992–94), based on the writings of Bruno Schulz; The Three Lives of Lucie Cabrol (1994–96), adapted from a short story by John Berger; and a new translation of Eugène Ionesco's The Chairs (1997–98).

The company was founded by Simon McBurney, Annabel Arden, and Marcello Magni, with the aim of exploring universal human issues in a new and often physical theatrical language, constantly being reinvented. Early, small-scale productions included the company's first play Put It On Your Head (1983), set at the English seaside, More Bigger Snacks Now (1985), and Please, Please, Please (1986), about a family at Christmas.

More recent productions include Anything for a Quiet Life (1987, television adaption 1989), The Phantom Violin (1988), The Visit (1989, redesigned for the National Theatre in 1991), Help! I'm Alive (1990), The Winter's Tale (1992), and The Caucasian Chalk Circle (1997).
