compound word

Word that is formed from two or more other words. For example, teapot, from tea and pot; blackbird, from black and bird.

Most compound words are nouns, but adjectives and verbs are also formed in this way. Some examples of nouns are coffee table, haircut, and washing machine; examples of adjectives are breathtaking, homesick, and law-abiding; and examples of verbs are rubber-stamp, keyboard, and overestimate.

Compound words may be written as one word, hyphenated, or as two words. Some examples are babysitter, bookshop, and keyhole; cover-up, man-eating, and spin-off; and pocket money, question mark, and social services.
