comprehensive schoolSecondary school that admits pupils of all abilities, and therefore without any academic selection procedure. In England 86.8% of all pupils attend a comprehensive school. Other state secondary schools are middle, deemed secondary (5.2%), secondary modern (2.6%), secondary grammar (4.2%), and technical (0.1%). There were 4,462 state secondary schools in 1995 to 1996, with 3,675,600 pupils. Most secondary education in the USA and the USSR has always been comprehensive, but most western European countries, including France and the UK, switched from a selective to a comprehensive system after about 1970.
