Compton

Village in Surrey, England, 6 km/4 mi southwest of Guildford; population (2001) 970. The church of St Nicholas has Saxon and Norman elements, and a Roman villa was excavated in the village. Compton has an art gallery devoted to the work of the Victorian painter and sculptor George Frederick Watts, including Watts' memorial chapel with its art nouveau interior.

Compton

City in Los Angeles County, southwestern California, USA, between Los Angeles (to the north) and Long Beach (to the south); population (1990) 90,500. Electronics and heating equipment, aircraft parts, pipe, felt, roofing, tools, and structural steel are among the city's industries.

Settled in 1867, it was primarily agricultural until World War II, when rapid industrial and residential growth began.

Compton Community College (1927) is in this predominantly black, working- and middle-class city.
