conscriptionLegislation for all able-bodied male citizens (and female in some countries, such as Israel) to serve with the armed forces. It originated in France in 1792, and in the 19th and 20th centuries became the established practice in almost all European states. Modern conscription systems often permit alternative national service for conscientious objectors.

It said he had sent a letter to the Pope in late August, asking for his help to avoid compulsory military service in Turkey. A new declaration of refusal by "shministim," students of the 11th and 12th grades of Israeli high schools, addressed to the Israeli Prime Minister and Defense Minister, has collected 250 signatures of students facing compulsory military service. After that (from 2008 on) we will be prepared to reduce the term of compulsory military service to one year. |
