computer art

Art produced with the help of a computer. From the 1950s the aesthetic use of computers became increasingly evident in most artistic disciplines, including film animation, architecture, and music.

Computer graphics (CG) has been the most developed area, with the ‘paint-box’ computer liberating artists from the confines of the canvas. It is now also possible to program computers in advance to generate graphics, music, and sculpture, according to ‘instructions’ which may include a pre-programmed element of unpredictability. In this last function, computer technology has been seen as a way of challenging the elitist nature of art by putting artistic creativity within relatively easy reach of anyone owning a computer.
