computer crime

Broad term applying to any type of crime committed via a computer, including unauthorized access to files. Most computer crime is committed by disgruntled former employees or subcontractors. Examples include the releasing of viruses, hacking, and computer fraud. Many countries, including the USA and the UK, have specialized law enforcement units to supply the technical knowledge needed to investigate computer crime.

In 2005 the FBI estimated that the annual cost to US companies of combating computer related crime amounted to $67 billion.

With this background, the Tenth UN Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, in its Vienna Declaration on Crime and Justice, has decided to develop action-oriented policy recommendations and to work towards "enhancing our ability to prevent, investigate and prosecute high-technology and computer-related crime.
So far this year, the LAPD unit that handles sex crimes against children says it has arrested 15 people for computer-related crimes involving minors - compared to six arrests last year - and is investigating 14 other reports.
To my knowledge, the first case for which lawyers worked collaboratively in this way involved an alleged computer-related crime in California in 1983.
