Comstock Lode

Silver mine in west Nevada. It was discovered in 1859. The mine is situated on Mount Davidson, in the Virginia Mountains, 32 km/20 mi south-southeast of Reno. It was one of the largest silver deposits ever discovered, and contributed to the development of Nevada as an important mining area. Virginia City was established adjacent to the mines in 1859 and was once the largest city in Nevada, before the flooding of the richest deposits, and the end of silver coinage, brought about a rapid decline in the 1880s. The area is today largely a tourist centre.
