Comtat Venaissin

Historic district of southern France, which now forms part of the département of Vaucluse. It lies between Mont Ventoux and the Rivers Rhône and Durance; its capital was Carpentras. Ceded by Philip III (the Bold) of France to the pope in 1274, the Comtat Venaissin remained papal territory until 1791, when it was annexed by France.
