Conanicut Island

Island in Newport County, southern Rhode Island, USA; c.14 km/9 mi long and 2–3 km/1–2 mi wide; population (1990) 5,000. One of three main islands in Narragansett Bay, and coextensive with Jamestown, it lies between Newport and the mainland (to the west), and is connected to both by bridge. Beaver Tail Light (1856), the latest in a series of lighthouses dating from 1749, is at the southern tip.
