Concord, Formula of

    0.06 sec.

Concord, Formula of

A formulation of Lutheran belief drawn up by six Lutheran divines in March 1577. The Concord rejected the views on the Eucharist put forward by Melanchthon, and also the views on predestination expressed by Calvin. It proved only a partial settlement of the Lutheran debate, and was rejected by many Lutherans, especially outside Germany. For this reason the Formula never possessed the authority of the Confession of Augsburg.

Its original inspiration lay in a series of articles by the German divine Jakob Andreae (1528–90) that had resulted in the Swabian-Saxon Formula of Concord in 1575, and the Torgau Book of 1576.
