Condillac, Étienne Bonnot de (1715–1780)

French philosopher. He mainly followed English philosopher John Locke, but his Traité de sensations (1754) claims that all mental activity stems from the transformation of sensations. He was a collaborator on the French Encyclopédie.

Condillac was born in Grenoble of noble parentage. He entered the church and was appointed tutor to Louis XV's grandson, the duke of Parma.
