conductus

A 12th-13th-century vocal composition originally processional in character and written for one or more voices. The basic melody of a conductus was generally a tune specially composed. A conductus cum cauda was a polyphonic composition ending with an elaborate tail-piece without words (cauda, Latin ‘tail’). In the polyphonic conductus the parts normally move in the same rhythm.
