Congreve, William (English inventor)

Congreve, William (1772-1828)

English inventor. He invented the Congreve rocket, which was used successfully during the Napoleonic Wars: at the siege of Copenhagen in 1807, Lord Gambier's engagement at the Basque Roads in 1809, and the Battle of the Nations, Leipzig, in 1813.

He patented many other inventions, including a process of colour printing, pyrotechnic improvements, a smoke-consuming device, and gun-recoil mountings.
