Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.10 sec.

Coninxloo, Gillis van (1544-1607)

Flemish landscape painter and engraver. The most prominent of a large family of painters, he settled in Amsterdam in 1595, becoming the leader of a group of landscape painters. His son, of the same name, was a flower painter.

Coninxloo the elder was born in Antwerp. He combined elements of Brueghel and Brill, producing fanciful compositions which progressively became more naturalistic in their treatment of detail.
