Connolly, Justin (Riveagh) (1933– )

English composer. He studied at the Royal College of Music, London, with Peter Fricker, and was appointed professor there in 1966. He taught at Yale University, USA, in the early 1960s and his music has been influenced by Milton Babbitt and Elliott Carter.

Orchestral

Rebus for orchestra (1970), Diaphony for organ and orchestra (1977), symphony (1991).

Instrumental

six sets of Triads (trios) for various instrumental ensembles (1964–74), five sets of Obbligati for various chamber ensembles (1965–81), Antiphonies for 36 instruments (1966), Fourfold from the Garden Forking Path for two pianos (1983).

Vocal

two sets of Poems of Wallace Stevens for soprano, clarinet, and piano (1967–70), Sentences for chorus, brass, and organ (to poems by Thomas Traherne, 1979), oratorio The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (text by Blake), Spelt from Sibyl's Leaves for six solo voices and ensemble (1989), Cantata for soprano and piano (1991).

Other

Chimaera for dancer, alto, baritone, and ensemble (1979).
