Conon (c. 450–389 BC)

Athenian admiral. When the Athenian fleet was destroyed by the Spartans at the Battle of Aegospotami 405 BC, Conon escaped with eight ships and took refuge with Evagoras I, King of Cyprus. In 394, as joint commander of a Persian fleet, he won a decisive victory over the Spartans off Cnidus, southwestern Asia Minor. Then he returned to Athens, where he restored the long walls and the fortifications of Peiraias.

While on a mission from Athens to the Persian court, he discovered that his life was in danger and he escaped to Cyprus (where he died).
