Conroe

City in southeastern Texas, USA, 61 km/38 mi north of Houston; seat of Montgomery County; population (1990) 27,600. There is some oil production in the area, and agricultural processing is important.

Founded in 1881, it was a lumber centre before 1931, when the Conroe Oilfield (to the southeast) was opened, causing a boom.

Nearby recreational facilities including Lake Conroe (8,500 ha/21,000 ac, on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River, 11 km/7 mi to the northwest) and the Sam Houston National Forest (to the north) have contributed to Conroe's recent growth as an outer Houston suburb.
