conservatism

Approach to government favoring the maintenance of existing institutions and identified with a number of Western political parties, such as the US Republican, British Conservative, German Christian Democratic, and Australian Liberal parties. It tends to favour a ‘practical’ rather than a theoretical approach but generally emphasizes free-enterprise capitalism, minimal government intervention in the economy, rigid law and order, and the importance of national traditions.
