Consett

Industrial town in Durham, England; population (2001) 9,200. It is situated 19 km/12 mi southwest of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and lies 260 m/853 ft above sea level. A steelworks dominated the town from 1840 until its closure in 1980. Consett now supports light manufacturing.

Shotley Bridge, 3 km/2 mi to the north, was well known in the 18th century for sword making by German cutlers. Ebchester, 5 km/3 mi to the north, lies on the site of a Roman camp and has an 11th-century parish church built of Roman stone.
