ConstanţaChief Romanian port on the Black Sea, capital of Constanţa region, and second-largest city of Romania; population (2002) 310,500. It has refineries, shipbuilding yards, and food factories. It is the exporting centre for the Romanian oilfields, to which it is connected by pipeline. It was founded as a Greek colony in the 7th century BC, and later named after the Roman emperor Constantine I (4th century AD). Ovid, the Roman poet, lived in exile here. The third time was also in Romania, in the port town of Constanta. A request by the Millennium Group to have the case transferred to the distant city of Constanta was recently accepted by a high court panel and they now await that decision in September. It will add one weekly flight to its Tirgu Mures and Constanta services and offer three more flights to Timisoara. |
