Constantine, Learie Nicholas (1901–1971)| West Indian cricketer. A dynamic all-rounder, fast bowler, big-hitting batsman and brilliant fielder, he was one of cricket's greatest entertainers. Although he rarely played to his full potential in test matches his popularity helped raise the profile of West Indian cricket in the 1920s and 1930s, particularly in England where he played a lot of his cricket. During and after World War II he concerned himself with public affairs, becoming High Commissioner for Trinidad and Tobago 1962–64, and a governor of the BBC. He was made a life peer in 1969. |
