Constantine XI Palaeologus (1404-1453)

Last Byzantine emperor and despot of the Morea (Peloponnese) 1149-53. When the Ottoman sultan Muhammad II attacked Constantinople in 1453, Constantine led the final desperate resistance with about 7,000 men against at least ten times that number of Turks. He was killed in the fighting and the city was taken on 29 May.
