Consumers Union

Private organization formed in the USA in 1936 to protect consumers' interests, usually in terms of quality and safety.

Consumers Union publishes Consumer Reports, a monthly summary of tests and comparisons conducted by independent researchers, and two newsletters on health and money matters. A champion consumer advocacy, the organization seeks to inform the public and hold manufacturers responsible for their products. See also Ralph Nader.

A recent study by Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, found that insurers were charging good drivers living in predominantly African-American and Latino Zip codes in California substantially more for auto insurance than good drivers living in predominantly white communities.
The Yonkers Industrial Development Agency (IDA) has given preliminary approval to the nonprofit consumer advocacy group Consumers Union to borrow $10 million for the expansion of its headquarters and to refinance $39 million in debt borrowed through the IDA in 1989.
