areaThe size of a surface. It is measured in square units, usually square inches (in2), square yards (yd2), or square miles (mi2). Surface area is the area of the outer surface of a solid. The areas of geometrical plane shapes with straight edges are determined using the area of a rectangle. Integration may be used to determine the area of shapes enclosed by curves. Bus et al (16) documented the load redistribution by comparing a custom-made insole (which included an MP) with a flat insole but did not report contact area or soft-tissue thickness (STT). To prevent iatrogenic damage, the clinician can place a small, almost matrix-like band called the InterGuard (Photo 5) in the interproximal area before prepping the contact area. This increases the surface contact area between materials and maximizes the process. |
