Conti, Gioacchino (1714-1761)

Italian soprano castrato. He was a rival of Caffarelli. He sang in Rome from 1730 and at Covent Garden, London, 1736-37, in the first performances of Handel's Atalanta, Arminio, Giustino, and Berenice. He sang in Italy and Spain until 1755 in operas by Johann Hasse, Niccolò Jommelli, and Baldassare Galuppi. He was praised for his expressive singing in a high range.
