Conti, House of

    0.02 sec.

Conti, House of

Junior branch of the French house of Bourbon–Condé, founded by Armand de Bourbon (1629–1666), second son of Henri II, Prince of Condé. The family line continued until 1814.

In 1551 Elenore de Roye married Louis I de Bourbon, the first Prince of Condé, and brought him the small town of Conti, near Amiens. The title was renewed in favour of their great-grandson Armand. Armand's son, François Louis de Bourbon (1664–1709), a distinguished soldier, was elected king of Poland after John III Sobieski died in 1696, but never obtained the throne. The elder brother of François, Louis Armand (1661–1685), fought in Hungary with Henri Turenne and Prince Eugène. François Louis's grandson, Louis-François (1717–1776), was also a candidate for the Polish throne.
