continental shelf

Submerged edge of a continent, a gently sloping plain that extends into the ocean. It typically has a gradient of less than 1°. When the angle of the sea bed increases to 1°−5° (usually several hundred kilometres away from land), it becomes known as the continental slope.

In less than a year, there will be a seismic shift on the continental shelves of Europe that affects electrical and electronics companies everywhere.
However, along North America's eastern coast, where continental shelves typically are wide and have gentle slopes, the heads of undersea canyons usually lie many kilometers offshore.
We have already eaten about 90% of the big fish that live on continental shelves and the open ocean (Myers and Worm 2003), and in many coastal waters densities have been reduced to a far greater extent.
