lily of the valley

Plant belonging to the lily family, growing in woods in Europe, northern Asia, and North America. The small bell-shaped white flowers hang downwards from short stalks attached to a central stem; they are strongly scented. The plant is often cultivated. (Convallaria majalis, family Liliaceae.)

Byline: by Gavin Beech THE curtain is being drawn on the wonderful training career of Geoff Wragg, but the 78-year-old managed to bag another winner before he bows out when Convallaria got up in the shadows of the post to land the second division of the 7f handicap.
Although not in flower on Mother's Day, my mother's favourite flower was lily of the valley, Convallaria majalis, and I have a small patch in my garden in her memory.
Plants that immediately spring to mind include hostas, Crocus tommasinianus, Convallaria majalis (lily-of-the-valley) and two evergreens - Asplenium scolopendrium (hearts tongue fern) and Iris foetidissima.
