Conventicle Act

Conventicle Act

Statute of 1664 in England designed to suppress nonconformists, prohibiting five or more persons from holding religious meetings other than of the established Church. Similar to an Elizabethan statute 1593, this contentious measure expired 1667 but was then re-enacted in milder form 1670 before being repealed by the Toleration Act 1689.
