Coober Pedy

Town in the Great Central Desert, Australia; 700 km/437 mi northwest of Adelaide, southern Australia; population (1991) 2,500. The town lies on the Sturt Highway, at the edge of the desert, on the world's leading opal field. Water has to be imported, and, because of the extreme heat (temperatures reach 60°C/140°F), most of the town has been built below ground.

The settlement gained the status of a town in 1960.
