Cook County

County in northeastern Illinois, USA; area 2,481 sq km/958 sq mi; population (1990) 5,105,100. The county is situated on eastern Lake Michigan and extends along it to the Indiana state line (to the south). The Chicago, Des Plaines, and Calumet rivers flow through it, as do the Illinois and Michigan and Chicago Sanitary and Ship canals. By far the most populous and urbanized county in the state, it is dominated by Chicago, the county seat, and includes most of its inner suburbs, including Evanston, Calumet City, Harvey, Des Plaines, Schaumburg, Wilmette, and Cicero. Cook County is the second most populous US county, after Los Angeles County, California.

The data used to illustrate the methods of this article are concurrent daily time series of mortality, weather, and particulate air pollution from Cook County for 1987-1994.
