Cooke, Arnold (1906– )

English composer. He was educated at Repton School and Caius College, Cambridge, where he was awarded a music degree in 1929. From that year to 1932 he was a pupil of Paul Hindemith in Berlin, Germany, and in 1933 was appointed professor of harmony and composition at the Royal Manchester College of Music. In 1938 he settled in London, and was appointed professor of composition at Trinity College of Music, London, in 1947.

Mary Barton (1949–54), The Invisible Duke (1976).

Vocal

cantata Holderneth for baritone, chorus, and orchestra; four Shakespeare sonnets for voice and orchestra.

Orchestral

six symphonies (1946–84), two clarinet concertos, concert overture for orchestra, Passacaglia, Scherzo, and Finale for string orchestra, piano concerto.

Chamber

five string quartets (1933–78), and other chamber music.
