Cooke, George Frederick (1756–1812)

English actor. His appearance at Covent Garden, London, in 1800 as Richard III in Shakespeare's play was an immediate success, and he remained there for ten years. He was at his best in powerful, villainous roles.

In 1810 he went to the USA and was enthusiastically received, but audiences fell away when he proved unreliable.
