Cooke, Henry

Cooke, Henry (c. 1615–1672)

English bass and composer. He was a pupil at the Chapel Royal, and a captain in the Duke of Northumberland's army during the Civil War. He was appointed singer and Master of the Children of the Chapel Royal at the Restoration. With Charles Coleman, Hudson, Henry Lawes, and Locke he contributed to Davenant's Siege of Rhodes (an entertainment at Rutland House), in 1656, and sang in it. His daughter married Pelham Humfrey, Cooke's successor as Master of the Children.
