Cooke, Sam

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.07 sec.

Cooke, Sam (1931–1964)

US soul singer and songwriter. He began his career as a gospel singer and turned to pop music in 1956. His hits include ‘You Send Me’ (1957) and ‘Wonderful World’ (1960; re-released 1986). His smooth tenor voice gilded some indifferent material, but his own song ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ (1965) is a moving civil-rights anthem.

He influenced many later pop stars, including Smokey Robinson and Michael Jackson. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
