Cookeville

City in north-central Tennessee, USA, at the eastern edge of the Nashville Basin, midway between Nashville (to the west) and Knoxville (to the east); seat of Putnam County; population (2000) 23,000. Industries include clothing, furniture, car parts, sporting goods, cheese, and pottery.

Founded in 1854, it grew as an agricultural trade centre, relying also on local coal, marble, and granite.
