coolie| Unskilled indentured labourer of India and East Asia. Coolies were introduced into many parts of the world, especially the Caribbean, Africa, Fiji Islands, Malaya, and Ceylon, when labour was needed for plantations after the abolition of slavery in the 1840s. The system was gradually replaced by free immigration after the introduction of laws prohibiting their entry by many countries. |
