Cooper Creek

River in Channel Country, southwest Queensland, Australia; length 1,420 km/880 mi. Cooper Creek rises in southwest Queensland, near the town of Windorah, and flows south for some distance before turning west and flowing by means of a delta into Lake Eyre. Its tributaries include the Thomson and Barcoo rivers. The explorers Robert Burke and William Wills died here in 1861.

The expedition of Burke and Wills is the subject of Alan Moorehead's book Cooper Creek. Cooper Creek is often dry, but in the wet season (April-November) it forms a series of detached pools and lagoons.
