Cooperstown

Town in Otsego township, central New York, USA, at the southern tip of Otsego Lake and on the headwaters of the Susquehanna River, 53 km/33 mi southeast of Utica; seat of Otsego County; population (1990) 2,200. Tourism is vital to its economy.

It was founded (1786) by Judge William Cooper, whose son, James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851), set his ‘Leatherstocking Tales’ in the region. The author is buried here.

Cooperstown is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Just outside Cooperstown are the Farmers' Museum, Glimmerglass Opera House, and Fenimore House.
